If you’re looking to nurture new talent and promote a collaborative workplace, chances are you’ve already been interviewing and perhaps have hired soon-to-be graduating college students for open positions with your company.
But even before these new workers are on the payroll, there are several things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth onboarding process:
- Teach them about your company – Don’t hold back on any information that you think could be valuable to their success on the job. Remember, even with internship experience, this person is new to the industry, so fully share details about the company history, goals, mission and culture.
- Focus on improving their “soft” skills – Recent grads are incredibly knowledgeable about the latest trends and have a fresh mindset having just sprung from the classroom. But how is their critical thinking? Are they willing to collaborate with others from your team? The soft skills, which include things like leadership, adaptability and growth potential are important for them to acquire and maintain with your guidance.
- Team them up with a mentor – We all need someone to look up to professionally as a source of knowledge and advice. It’s even more critical to provide mentorship to a college grad to boost their confidence and ensure job satisfaction. Match a senior employee and the new hire with careful consideration. Be sure to provide guidance as you monitor the relationship and measure the results.
Bringing new, young talent on staff is not only exciting, but it can really stimulate your company’s culture and growth.
